Dave Doughty

After having worked on and managed a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes Dave was appointed Director of International HR Developments for Nottingham Business School in 2004.This appointment was a reflection of the University’s increasing interest in developing its international programmes with the HR Department at the forefront of this expansion, especially with its professional postgraduate courses.

During his time on the undergraduate programmes Dave was responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with employers for the provision of an industrial placement service for the benefit of both employers and students.

Dave has extensive experience of working overseas. He has managed International projects on behalf of the University in Azerbaijan, India, Greece, Zimbabwe, Iran, France, The Netherlands, Poland, and Bulgaria and was responsible for establishing and managing CIPD programmes in Russia, Azerbaijan, Angola, Kazakhstan, Dubai and Prague. He has also conducted “HR master classes” in various international locations such as The Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Latvia and Switzerland.

Dave has written a number of articles and presented at a range of “International conferences” as well as having contributed a chapter on “International HRM” to a leading textbook on “Strategic HRM”,and recently had a chapter based on his work with BP in Azerbaijan accepted for publication in the “Ambassadors casebook”-a prestigious book published by the American Academy of Management.

Dave has extensive consultancy experience including working with BP and PricewaterhouseCoopers for a number of years as well as major companies in the hospitality industry in places such as Baku, Dubai, Moscow and London. He has also provided consultancy services to a range of public sector organisations including the British Library. He has also recently developed a programme for Emirates Airlines to commence later this year. Dave has also been a visiting professor in Bescancon, France, Twente University in The Netherlands, FORE School of Management in Delhi, India,University of Valencia and Universities in Vienna and Graz in Austria.

His current research interests include: cross cultural management; power and influence of HR specialists in organisations within ‘transitional societies’; HR specialists and line-management relationships; localisation of employment and developing trust relationships between local and expatriate managers. Dave has also been involved in research around outsourcing with a special interest in call centers in India.

Dave has just (Dec 2015) been awarded a research contract (with a partner in Dubai) to examine issues of employability in the Emirates.

Most recently Dave has been invited to be a keynote speaker for an international conference in Kuwait, as well as the professional HR(CIPD) conference in the U.K. and an international conference on knowledge transfer at Moscow State University.

In May 2014 Dave chaired an international conference on the MENA HR in Oil and Gas held in Muscat and is now a member of the organizing committee for the International Committee of Organization and Management (ICOM) after having presented at the ICOM conference at Abu Dhabi University.

The route into academia was slightly unusual for Dave and occurred due to injury curtailing a professional football career.
